Rooted in Culture, Guided by Community, Growing the Future of Indigenous Midwifery

Indigenous Midwifery Mentorship Program of BC

Walking Together in Midwifery

The Indigenous Midwifery Mentorship Program of BC (IMMP-BC) was shaped by the voices of Indigenous midwives in British Columbia. It was created to support connection, care, and knowledge-sharing between midwives at different stages of their journeys. Whether you are just starting out or have years of experience, this is a space to reflect, build relationships, and support one another.

Mentorship is not just about learning. It is about relationship. It is about honouring our ways of knowing, holding space for each other, and continuing the circle of care that has always existed in our communities. This program is here to support Indigenous midwives at all stages, to grow the strength of our workforce, and to reclaim birth as a place of power, culture, and belonging.

Program Roots

IMMP-BC was shaped through conversations with Indigenous midwives across British Columbia. Many shared the need for connection, cultural safety, and support that reflects the lived realities of Indigenous practice.

Through surveys, informal dialogues, and community input, a vision took shape, one that centres relationship, reciprocity, and care. What emerged was not just a mentorship model, but a space for Indigenous midwives to walk alongside one another, share teachings, and feel supported at every stage of their journeys.

This program reflects the strengths, voices, and leadership of Indigenous midwives who have long held and carried this work. It is guided by their experiences, and grounded in the belief that mentorship can help grow a stronger, more connected midwifery community in BC.

Your Role In The Circle

If you’re a student or starting out as a midwife,

IMMP-BC offers support from an experienced Indigenous midwife who understands the path you're on. You’ll choose a mentor based on shared values, interests, or Nation, and connect in ways that work for you. Mentorship can include emotional support, clinical guidance, cultural connection, or simply having someone to talk to who gets it.

If you’re an experienced midwife,

this is a chance to give back, build community, and walk alongside someone new to the profession. You don’t need to have all the answers, your presence, your story, and your willingness to support someone else is what matters most. We provide orientation, check-in tools, and space to share teachings and resources with others in the program.
